We recently came across an interesting concept of using donuts for shin splint treatments. While this seems rather unconventional we were intrigued when we saw reference of doing just that on twitter from one of our favorite runners Vince known as @vkoser on twitter.

Following along with the conversation there we saw several inquires as to if they were to be used as a topical treatment or to be taken orally as a nutritional supplement. We went right to the source and asked @vkoser for his rundown on proper use.
Vince had this to say about the program: “When employing an unconventional treatment for a common problem it’s important to keep in mind that the results of the treatment might not contribute directly to actually improving your condition, but will offer you some relief through taking your mind off the actual problem.”
Vince indicated that taking the donuts orally would have the greatest effect for pain relief and the relief is mostly experienced during the actual chewing/tasting portion of their use. If you experience a lull or lessening of the pain blocking effect it is recommended that you find another donut and eat it right away.
Vince’s key points to remember
- Choose heavily frosted donuts for the greatest sugar concentration
- If possible consume coffee while eating the donuts to speed infusion and nutritional absorption
- Selection of filled donuts is not a requirement but a recommendation (As a bonus creamy filling dripped on your shirt can be used later as body glide)
- Wait 1 hour after eating before running
